Margiela: The Hermès Years

A celebratory exhibition

Text: Irene Magina

The highly-influential and avant-garde fashion designer Maison Martin Margiela was the art director for the Hermès Women’s ready-to-wear collection in 1997-2003. During this period he redefined Hermès heritage with his minimalist elegance and monochrome colour palette, while he reconstructed and renovated existing clothing by creating a masculine silhouette.

Given that no one considered this Hermès period as an entity and viewed at it rigorously had in relation to Margiela’s work under his own label, the Antwerp’s MoMu museum will present with an iconic exhibition the Martin Margiela Hermès story. The upcoming exhibition will showcase some of the designer’s most iconic garments and explore the designers’ relationship during those years between his own label and Hermès collections.

The Hermès Years will be on the display from 31 March 2017- 27 August 2017.
