As it turns out so far, May 4th will be a day of the fashion world to remember as Chanel’s cruise show, with Karl Lagerfeld at the helm, goes head-to-head with Anna Wintour’s Met Ball urging fashion’s Elite to make a meaningful choice between them.
Indeed, why Chanel choose this specific day to introduce their
collection? Bear in mind, it’s the second time that Lagerfeld has shown a collection the same night as anothermajor fashion event; in December his Métiers d’Art show held in Salzburg clashed with the annual Victoria’s Secret show in London, giving some of the industry’s best-known models a very tough choice: which should they walk? Definitely it’s not an accident! Could be a strategic movement asserting house’s total superiority or is it something more?

Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) contacted the Chanel powers and a spokesperson pronounced the scheduling “extremely difficult”, explaining, “We had committed to bringing our cruise collection to our Korean clients and May 4 was the only possible date. Chanel is very much dedicated to supporting the Anna Wintour Costume Institute Benefit this year as we always have. We greatly respect the incredible contributions Anna Wintour and The Metropolitan Museum of Art have made toward the preservation, education, and celebration of the art of fashion, and are proud to be a supporter of this important institution.”

According to sources, this wasn’t Chanel’s first choice of a date for the show. The French brand had originally wanted to host it’s cruise showcase 2015-2016 at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Zaha Hadid – designed, development on May 11th. However, when Raf Simons announced that Dior would stage its cruise show May 9 in Los Angeles the maison had to reschedule the day, taking into consideration the massive travel time for editors and celebrities between the two cities. But, the truth is that you’re Chanel; one of the most successful and innovative fashion houses of all ages! You could establish you’re own personal exhibition day by your terms and conditions… What’s really going on under the table?
One of the most important social events which takes place in New York is the Costume Institute Gala, or the Met Ball as it is more commonly known. The Gala is a major annual fundraising event which has been hosted by Vogue’s editor-in-chief and artistic director of Condé Nast since 1995, and held three days before the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2015 Anna Wintour Costume Center exhibition – “China: Through the Looking Glass”.

Meanwhile, Wintour was reportedly asked about the “coincidence” when she recently attended the Dior Haute Couture show in Paris, but expertly “deferred the museum” according to WWD. Until now, and because of the blizzard in New York, the Met office hasn’t take a specific position. Statements so far indicate that there seem to be no hard feelings between Lagerfeld and Wintour. So, is it possible this extraordinary personalities could make a silent agreement
about 4th May so as being always on the top of the fashion headlines and talk of the town? With the constantly support of Cara Delevingne, Joan Smalls and Kendall Jenner all regular faces on a Chanel catwalk, plus Kirsten Stewart,
Rihanna, Vanessa Paradis and Keira Knightley all commonplace front row; it’s clear that will be more than a few models, stars or editors who will be torn between New York and Seoul this May.
This shall be interesting; who is going to side with Anna and attend the Met Gala and who will join the Lagerfeld alliance? Either it was their intention or not the mission accomplished. Both events will be a remarkable success!
