It has already been to Brooklyn and Rotterdam, and now it’s London’s turn to showcase the exhibition “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” before it travels to Australia. It’s one of the very few times that such a tribute is made to a living fashion designer. Jean Paul Gaultier, ”l’ enfant terrible” of fashion, is one of the most famous contemporary designers of his time. Among his iconic creations is the famous corset and the french marieniere. The first has been worn by numerous artists, including Madonna, Beyonce and Kate Moss, and has walked down the catwalk a numerous times.
I am a huge fan of Jean Paul Gaultier, my respect for him is immense, not only because his an iconic designer and artist, but also because he’s a wonderful and special person. I was lucky enough to work with him, on his Pret-a-Porter show in Paris, 2 years ago, .
We first met while filming for Greece’s Next Top Model in 2011 in his atelier in Paris, he welcomed as a true gentleman and made us feel at home right
away. He guided the new upcoming models into his magic fashion world and helped them realize the importance of fashion, creativity, always keeping your good manners and flexibility. That day at Jean Paul Gaultier’s was a huge lesson for all of us.
He later asked to asked me to participate in his fashion show the year after. At first I thought he was kidding, but truly a year later the phone rang and Constantinos Katalakinos, stylist of Gaultier Paris, was at the other end of the line reminding me of our rendez-vous.
Oh boy, how great was that!
Backstage, make-up, hair, extensions, platforms, Karlie Kloss (Jean Paul’s favorite at the moment), Andrej Peijic, super models and Jean Paul kind and helpful with everyone backstage, leading the way for a wonderful show. Wallpaper magazine was covering the backstage madness. The most important of all? My students sitting in the front row and witnessing all this happening.
This wonderful exhibition taking place in Barbican Center, London, took me down memory lane, so here are a few of my favorite moments featuring Jean Paul!
Kisses & hugs
