CINEMATIQUE: “The Two Faces of January”

Based on the novel of 1964 with the same name by Patricia Highsmith, the movie “The Two Faces of January” premieres on the 64th International Festival of Berlin, Berninale.

The story is about the American couple Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife Colette (Kirsten Dunst) who tour Greece together and visit the Acropolis of Athens. There, they meet Rydal (Oscar Isaac), who works as a tour guide but scams tourists in the process. The MacFarlands invite Rydal to dinner, and Rydal, entranced by the couple’s wealth and beauty and so he accepts their invitation. While Rydal visits the MacFarlands’ hotel, Chester presses him to help move an unconscious body. Rydal helps, but eventually gets caught up in ensuing events. He also becomes infatuated with Colette and runs the risk of provoking Chester’s ire.


The thriller film takes place in the 60’s atmosphere of Athens, Crete, Turkey and at a small studio in London and is based on the same name novel “The Two Faces Of January”. The director and screenwriter (DRIVE) Hossein Amini debuts with his fisrt directional movie on the 64th Berninale.


The first trailer of the movie in now online and the on-screen expirience is full of Greece, manhunt and mystery which is going to cripple the viewers.
