Designer Joseph Altuzarra for J. Crew
The winner of the 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, Joseph Altuzarra’s has an impressive CV. Having worked with Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Riccardo Tisci, he rushed to present his own vision on fashion. The big prize was not the 300.000 dollars but the chance to have his star shining. As CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg said “Once in the Fashion Fund, we will continue to guide you and protect you.”
The announcement of his capsule collection for J. Crew came as a surprise to fashion experts. After having seen the collection, I am thoughtful too. His apparent inspiration is Jean Seberg and Brigitte Bardot, “the time she was walking around St-Tropez in espadrilles and a slouchy boy’s sweater”, as the designer said. Mariniere sweaters full of holes and jingham check dresses, pencil skirts and espadrilles prove not only lack of originality but maybe Altuzarra’s inspiration poverty.
