MC Talent Diaries: Unexpected Chances

Text: Kelly Desipri

Four months ago, when nine students were chosen to intern at Marie Claire magazine, my name was not on the list. But I was still chosen as a runner up and my break came a few weeks ago, when I was asked to join the 2nd team of interns! I had no idea back then what an important experience it would prove to be.

Since day one I had to let go of my astonishment and act professionally, in order to produce three designs for versatile summer dresses that would accompany one of Maria Claire’s summer issues. Me and Mariannie worked hard to achieve the best possible result in very short time, so we both felt very proud when our designs were praised upon by our editor in chief. But the adventure had only just began!

During the weeks that followed I would write several small articles for, including styling tips and the latest fashion trends. Furthermore, we all wrote small pieces that will be featured on the next issue of Marie Claire, in our very own MC Talent page. If I had to choose though, I’d say that helping out in photoshoots, and translating catwalk trends into street fashion is my favorite task as a styling intern.

There is a unique feeling in taking what you’ve learned so far and actually making it work in “the real world”. It requires a healthy amount of confidence and creativity, as well as adaptability, humility and of course, street smarts! All of these and more are expected of an intern at such a major fashion magazine and I’m having a really great time pushing myself a little bit further everyday and learning everything there is to know about the reality of the job.

I have a few more precious days left to absorb as much as I can, and hopefully prove myself worthy of a future career in the magical world of fashion. So fasten your seatbelts and let’s hope this ride never ever ends!
