French brand Saint Laurent Paris has a huge history in the fashion world and it has introduced many style innovations. So the decision to choose a woman to star in the new menswear advertising campaign didn’t come as a surprise. Actually, YSL was the brand which first of all, created the female Le Smoking tuxedo, that is considered a classic piece through the decades.
Creative director of Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane, blown away by Saskia de Brauw’s androgynous appearance, chose her to feature in the black and white ads for the Men Spring/Summer 2013 collection. The 31-year-old Dutch model got photographed by Slimane himself and the result reminds us a photo shoot by Helmut Newton featuring the iconic tux from 1966.
The reason why the director of the brand casted a woman for his menswear line is to break stereotypical gender roles in fashion and to show that the clothes are perfect for both sexes. As he has previously said “perception of genders ended up slightly out of focus from an early age”.
To be honest, the reason why Saskia is one of the most famous models in fashion world is not only because of her long legs and her athletic body, but also for her ability to transship: She can be a girly lady in Chanel’s advertising campaign with an a-la-garcon haircut, while she can walk as a boy in Givenchy’s Men Spring 2012 collection.
