On the 30th of November, Nicolas Ghesquière, the famous designer and creative
director of Balenciaga, is leaving the legendary Fashion House after 15 years, in consent of both sides. Ghesquiere was well known not only for the fact that he renewed the brand and made it global in the last decade, but also for his devotion and respect to Cristóbal Balenciaga’ s legacy: the retro-sixties aesthetic.
The designer introduced the high-waisted skinny pants, sharply tailored dresses in
techno materials (latex, leather), motorcycle jackets, gold metal leggings, tightly cut
wool jumpsuit with billowing sleeves -all futuristic appearances and he has immensely influenced other designers.
When the Gucci group bought Balenciaga, Nicolas Ghesquière was part of the deal.
The designer referred to this fact by saying: ‘It is a happy relationship and it has
worked because they wanted me to explain what I wanted to do with Balenciaga, not the other way around’.
Today’s announcement has puzzled the fashion world as to who would replace the
avant-garde designer and what would be his next move.
